From Legacy to Leading Edge: How Shutterfly is Continuing its Infrastructure Transformation with AWS

Oct 01, 2025

AWS detailed Shutterfly Business Solution’s latest migration in this AWS Case Study.

Shutterfly began its cloud migration journey with AWS in 2018, seeking out a strategic partner with reliability, scale, and breadth of services. Since then, we’ve migrated core production applications and our more than 75-petabyte consumer image library to AWS, including evacuating our collocated data center, in our ongoing efforts to modernize operations and be more agile and flexible in meeting the needs of millions of customers.

Earlier this year, Shutterfly Business Solutions (SBS) embarked on a bold journey to modernize its operations – migrating from a complex, on-premises VMware environment to a cloud-native architecture on AWS.

The results were remarkable:

  • VM footprint reduced by 40%, from 2,000 to 1,200 VMs.
  • Migration completed six months ahead of schedule, thanks to a wave-based planning approach.
  • Zero high-severity incidents during migration, with improved redundancy and no single points of failure.
  • 25% reduction in operating costs, driven by license avoidance and right-sizing.

As VP of Infrastructure Ian Wright shared, “We’ve taken big steps to burn down technical debt so we can focus on transformation and move with the kind of agility we had in the early days.”
