Holiday card season is here—and that means family photo time! We all know the drill: flyaway hair, crooked smiles, squinting in the sun, and chasing the family dog across the yard. Getting that perfect shot can feel like the hardest part of the holidays.

Luckily, HuffPost rounded up expert advice for capturing authentic, meaningful moments from professional photographers—including tips from our own Gretchen Richardson, Lifetouch’s Manager of Photography Training & Quality.

What is one thing you never do in your own family photos and why?

Don’t overthink it! It’s so easy to overthink family photos. Wanting to wear the perfect outfit, have everyone cooperate, get the best expression and capture the perfect photo. It’s so important to let yourself be comfortable and be “you”. Wear something you feel confident in! Let yourself loosen up and avoid being tense. It’s no secret – we all look better when we’re relaxed. The real magic happens when you are being your most authentic self!

Are there any other common mistakes people make in family photos?

I know a lot of families are hoping for genuine real smiles, especially from the kids! I’ve seen plenty of parents feel responsible for making sure their children are smiling. It’s a lot of pressure! Sometimes when that happens, kiddos stiffen up and try TOO hard for that real smile which ends up looking goofy and fake. That’s what your photographer is there for! Our photographers are trained with various engagement techniques for individuals of all ages to help capture that real smile everyone loves! Cracking a silly joke, making silly sounds or playing an easy game will usually get the giggles out and ensure everyone is showing their best smiles.

What is one thing you always do when posing for a photo, whether solo or with friends or family?

Snuggle in and get close. My favorite kind of photos are ones where you can see a story and the relationship between every person. I always keep that in mind when I’m posing for a photo with family or friends. I try to make a connection to someone close to me. Whether it’s an arm around someone’s back and squeezing them close, resting my head on someone’s shoulder or linking arms together. I love photos that show how much I love my people! Those are my favorite.
